National Fair Housing Alliance released the 2023 Fair Housing Trends Report, documenting a continuing increase in fair housing discrimination complaints nationwide. This year marks the highest number of complaints ever recorded and a troubling increase in complaints from survivors of domestic violence and people alleging source of income discrimination. The report underscores the need for increased funding to investigate complaints and support people experiencing discrimination. It also reveals the need for all groups, including government, industry players, and philanthropy, to advance fair housing.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS:

➡️ There were 33,007 fair housing complaints received in 2022 – the highest number of complaints ever reported in a single year;

➡️ Overall complaints were 5.74 percent higher than the previous year;

➡️ Complaints based on source of income and domestic violence increased;

➡️ Even with this record-setting number of complaints, most incidents of housing discrimination go undetected or unreported.

HUD ANNOUNCES NEW PROPOSED "AFFIRMATIVELY FURTHERING FAIR HOUSING" RULE, TAKING A MAJOR STEP TOWARDS ROOTING OUT LONGSTANDING INEQUITIES IN HOUSING AND FOSTERING INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will imminently publish a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the Federal Register to fulfill the promise of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. The proposed rule aims to remedy the effects of the long history of discrimination in housing. It will help to foster opportunities in communities across the country where every resident can thrive. In addition, this proposed rule meets President Biden's call in his first days in office to enforce the Fair Housing Act fully, outlined in Memorandum on Redressing Our Nation's and the Federal Government's History of Discriminatory Housing Practices and Policies.

The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA)’s Trends Report is a powerful, comprehensive annual review of reported housing discrimination complaints and notable fair housing cases. The data provides a snapshot of the number and types of housing discrimination complaints reported to NFHA members, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) agencies, and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. Together, these agencies make up the national infrastructure to address housing discrimination in the United States.  This data is analyzed, visualized, and accompanied by a contextual examination of the “trends” in fair housing.

Leading Civil Rights and Consumer Advocates Urge Congress to Enact Meaningful Appraisal Reform

9/9/2022

Fair Housing advocates urge Congress and the Biden Administration to reform the home valuation system to stop appraisal bias and the economic injury it causes. Removing The Appraisal Foundation’s ability to set appraisal standards and appraiser criteria while enhancing the power of the Appraisal Subcommittee will help to produce a fairer system and accurate appraisals for everyone.
